Health coverage for active-duty military, retirees, and dependents
Tricare provides health coverage for ~9M active-duty service members, retirees, and military dependents. Express Scripts manages the pharmacy benefit. Diabetes-indicated GLP-1s are covered; weight-loss indications are covered only with rigorous medical necessity criteria.
Tricare/Express Scripts covers Ozempic and Mounjaro for diabetes at tier 2. Wegovy and Zepbound for weight-loss require medical necessity PA — typically BMI ≥30, documented 6-month diet/exercise program, and prescriber justification. Active-duty members can be evaluated for medical separation if obesity is severe enough to affect readiness.
